Human cytomegalovirus (CMV)
This virus is enlarged and multinucleated.
Cause intrauterine infections and congenital abnormalities.
It is very severe for immunodeficient.
Sources and Mode of Transmission
Saliva is most common source of infection in children.
In adults, virus is transmitted by;
1. Sexual intercourse
2. Blood transfusion
3. Organ transplant
4. Breast milk; thus neonates can be infected.
5. Cross placental barrier
Transmitted by urine, salivary, droplets and through placenta from infected mother to fetus.
Pathogenesis
It appear when virus enters in body it causes;
1. Persistent fever
2. Muscle pain
3. Lymphadenopathy
Abnormal rise in lymphocytes and liver enzyme.
Causes congenital infection and infection in immunodeficient.
For example;
In AIDS patient CMV produce CNS disease.
Laboratory Diagnosis
Specimen collection;
Serum sample, CSF sample
ELISA test
Direct viral DNA determination
