Immunoglobulin E (IgE)
It is found on the surface membrane of basophils and mast cells in all individuals.
It is mostly distributed extravascularly and is produced by a very small proportion of plasma cells living in intestinal and respiratory tract.
Function
1. Elevated levels are seen in atopic condition (form of allergy, in which hypersensitivity reaction) such as; Asthma, Hay fever and Eczema.
2. Ig E also provide protection against parasitic worm.
3. Children having parasitic Infection in intestine show elevated levels of Ig E.
4. Reagin antibody responsible for immediate hypersensitivity reaction i.e allergy.
