Mycetoma
Caused by fungi which are present in soil. Chronic granulomatous infection of subcutaneous tissue, usually affect foot.
The disease quite common in Tamilnadu and first described from madurai. It is also called Madura foot.

Symptoms of Mycetoma (madura foot)
Abscess usually on;
Feet discharges pus.
Blood through sinuses tract
Discharge fluid containing cloured granules.
Useful in identification of particular pathogen.
Infection enter body through minor trauma, cause mainly foot swelling, subcutaneous painful mass.
Infection can spread to underlying bone, result crippling deformities.

Specimen collection
Microscopic examination of granules
Culture on Sabouraud's dextrose agar
(Diagnosis is made from examination of granules)
Causative Agent identity by colonies characters.
Treatment
There no effective chemotherapy for fungal mycetoma. Usual treatment is surgical excision or may require amputation.
