RNA Virus
RNA virus is a virus that has ribonucleic acid (RNA) as its genetic material. RNA virus is mostly single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) and less common be double-stranded (dsRNA).
1. Picornaviridae family
Small RNA virus, cause commond cold and poliomyelitis.
For example;
Polio virus
Echo virus
Rhinovirus
2. Orthomyxoviridae family
Includes influenza virus causing influenza (bird flue) and seasonal flue.
For example; influenza virus type A, B, C etc.
3. Paramyxoviridae family
Causing respiratory infections; measles, mumps in infants and children.
4. Togaviridae family
Mainly cause rubella and chickungunya infection (transmitted by mosquitoes bite from human to human).
5. Flaviviridae family
Cause (insect) arthropod borne Infections.
Mosquito and ticks transmitted. These Infections cause hemorrhagic reaction including dengue and yellow fever called arbovirus.
6. Bunyaviridae family
Largest group of insect borne disease.
7. Rhabdoviridae family
Bullet shaped virus causes rabies.
8. Reoviridae family
Contains rotavirus and is responsible for number of cases of diarrhoea and childhood diarrhoea cases.
9. Coronaviridae family
Have club shaped projection on surface, also cause viral disease called SARS.
10. Retroviridae family
Contain RNA viruses and converts RNA to DNA for replication.
For example; HIV virus
