Systemic Mycoses/ Deep Mycoses
The organism responsible for systemic Mycoses are divided into two groups.
1. Infect healthy individuals
2. Infect immunocompromised individual
Source and mode of Transmission
Contaminated dust is main source of infection.
It enters in host by inhalation of air borne spores.
This fungal infections affecting internal organs, fungi enters body via lungs.
Pathogenesis and clinical significance
Inhale spores of fungi germinate in lung.
From lungs spread infection to any origin to body where fungi can invade and destroy tissue.
Some fungi are already present in healthy patient with mild symptoms and self limited, but in immunocompromised patient, may beife threatening.
Major systemic mycotic infections
1. Coccidioidomycosis
By inhalation of dust containing arthrospores of fungus.
2. Histoplasmosis
Fungus is present in soil enriched with excreta of birds or bats.
3. Blastomycosis
Fungi produce microconidia in soil and enter lung through inhalation.
4. Paracoccidiomycoses
Contaminated dust is major source of transmission by inhalation.
