Blepharitis

 Blepharitis

Blepharitis is inflammation of eyelids margin.

It chronic bilateral inflammatory reaction of eyelids, usually affects usually edged of both eyelids and make inflammation around the base of the eyelashes.

Types of Blepharitis

1. Anterior Blepharitis

Anterior blepharitis divide into;

1. Staphylococcal blepharitis

Staphylococcal blepharitis is usually ulcerative and involvement of base of hair follicles that can result permanent scarring.

2. Seborrhoeic blepharitis 

Seborrhoeic blepharitis is greasy appearance and hyperemia occur in anterior eylid margin and lashes stuck together result soft scaling of eyelids.

2. Posterior blepharitis

Posterior Blepharitis divided into; 

1. Meibomian seborrhea

Meibomian blepharitis in which meibomian gland orifice, in  eyelids margin covered with small oil globule.

2. Meibomianitis

Inflammation of meibomian gland (oil gland; sebaceous gland) that cause obstruction.


Clinical Manifestations

1. Sore eye

2. Burning and itching of eyelid margins

3. Dry eye

4. Epiphora; eye discharge

5. Eye irritation

6. Photophobia; sensitivity to light 

7. Loss of eyelashes 

8. Eyelash rubbing against eyeball

Diagnostic Evaluation

1. Physical examination

2. Swabbing skin; collect a sample of oil or crust that forms on eyelid, to dentify for bacterial, fungi infection or allergy.


Management

1. Eyelids hygiene/cleaning 

Worm compression; Soak a cloth and apply to each eye.

2. Eyelid massage

3. Antibiotics ointment 

Chloramphenicol ointment; apply with cotton swab.

4. Systematic antibiotics

Tetracycline

Doxycycline
