Hordeolum
Hordeolum is also called Sty, infection or inflammation of meibomian gland (sebaceous gland) and follicle of eyelids margins at the edge of the eyelid, often filled with pus.
Types of Hordeolum
1. External Hordeolum
Develops at base of eyelash involving hair follicle of eyelid.
2. Internal Hordeolum
Sty arising due to inflamed meibomian gland under eyelids.
Etiology
1. Bacterial infection; Staphylococcus aureus
2. Blocking of oil gland at base of eyelashes
3. Stress
4. Blepharitis
5. Lack of eye hygiene
6. Poor nutrition
7. Rubbing of eyes
8. Allergic reaction
9. Sleep deprivation
Clinical Manifestations
1. Pain and tenderness of eyelids
2. Eyelid swollen and edematous
3. Eye irritation and itching
4. Heaviness of eyelids
5. Discomfort uring blinking of eye
6. Epiphora; eye discharge
7. Sensitivity to light
Diagnostic Evaluation
1. Physical examination
2. Sample of oil or crust that forms on eyelid
Management
1. Eyelid cleaning
Worm compression
2. Antibiotics ointment
Chloramphenicol ointment
3. Systematic antibiotics
Tetracycline
Doxycycline
