Streptococcus Agalactiae (Group B- beta hemolytic)
Streptococcus agalactiae are gram positive cocci occur in form of chains. They are found in vaginocervical tract of females, urethral mucosal membrane of male and in GI tract.
Source and mode if transmission
From an infected mother to her infant at birth.
By sexual contact among adults.
Pathogenesis and Clinical Significance (Diseases)
Exotoxins cause following diseases;
Meningitis and septicemia in neonates and women with endometriosis with high moratility rate.
In lower immunity persons, this pathogen may cause septicemia or pneumonia.

Specimen collection
Blood, cervical swabs, sputum, CSF
Culture
Blood agar
Antibiotic sensitivity test
Show sensitivity to penicillin G and ampicillin.
Treatment and Prevention
Administration of penicillin G to newborns.
Pregnant carrier should be treated with ampicillin during labour.
