Oncogene

A gene that is mutated (change) from gene involved in normal cell growth.

Genetic material that carries ability to induce cancer.


May cause growth of cancer cells.

Mutation in gene that become oncogenes can inherited or caused by exposure to substance in environment that cause cancer.

For example; 

Oncogenes may activate or exposed at high level or increase growth factor receptors in surface of cells.

HER 2 oncogene that result in increased number of HER 2 proteins on surface of breast cancer cells.

1. Regulate cell proliferation

2. Cell growth

3. Cell differentiation

4. Control of cell cycle

5. Apoptosis
