structure of genes

Characteristics and structure of Genes

Genes are segments of Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that contain code for a specific protein that function in one or more types of cells in the body.

Chromosomes are structures with in cells that contain a person's genes.

Genes are contained in chromosomes, which are in the cell nucleus.

Different chromosome contain different genes.

For example, in human gene for alpha globin, part of the hemoglobin protein that carry oxygen in red blood cells, is found on chromosome 16.

For example; individual characteristics like eye and hair.

Each chromosome contains hundreds to thousands of genes, which carry instruction for making protein.  (estimated 30, 000) genes in human genome.

Gene structure is a organization of specialized sequence elements with in gene.

A gene is any section along the DNA with instructions encoded that allow a cell to produce a specific product usually a protein, such as enzyme.

Transcription;  DNA to RNA

Translation;  mRNA to Protein

Replication; DNA to DNA
